Earn high school and college credit at the same time. As a Dual Enrollment partner of the University of South Florida and Miami Dade College, American High School Academy students can enroll in either school’s Dual Enrollment program.

How Dual Enrollment works
Dual Enrollment lets American High School Academy students take college courses at the University of South Florida or Miami Dade College while completing their high school diploma.
Credits you earn at USF or MDC count toward high school graduation and can also be applied to a college degree or certificate.

Miami Dade College: eligibility and requirements
Who is eligible? Students in grades 6–12 enrolled in Miami-Dade County public schools, participating private and charter schools, or home school can take part in the MDC dual enrollment program.
What are the requirements?
- A minimum 3.0 unweighted high school grade point average (GPA)
- Demonstrated readiness for college coursework through assessment of communication and computation skills (as established in State Board of Education Rule 6A-10.0315)*
- An understanding that dual enrollment courses take more work than high school courses
- Students must earn a “C” or higher in college-level courses and keep a 3.0 high school GPA to continue. Students whose college GPA falls below 2.0 can’t continue dual enrollment.
- Students may lose eligibility if they are disruptive to the learning process.
- All Dual Enrollment courses must be approved by the student’s secondary school counselor.
- Dual Enrollment courses are used to meet the student’s high school graduation requirements.
- College-credit dual enrollment includes college credit certificates, Associate in Science (AS) degrees and Associate in Arts (AA) degrees.
- Middle school students must meet the 3.0 GPA requirement and pass all three sections of the college placement exam.
*High school dual enrollment students who don’t meet the statutory eligibility requirements (GPA, test scores and alternate methods) may be eligible to take courses from a select list. Students should contact their high school counselor for more information.
University of South Florida: eligibility and requirements
Dual Enrollment at USF is a part-time program, available to qualified students throughout high school. Students may take 1–3 USF classes a semester, on any USF campus, online or at selected high schools.
- High school counselors at public or private schools (or the charter school or homeschool parent administrator) are the designated counselors who determine dual enrollment eligibility, approve course selections and monitor student performance.
- Students should always work through their school counselor or administrator to have courses approved. Counselors know which high school graduation requirements a student needs and which dual enrollment classes meet them.
